It specifically tells you to brew some water through it before. This machine is very solid, from my usage. I haven't had a problem because I make sure that I set the carafe down properly in the maker, and I also make sure that POUR and the arrow are squarely lined up. I am not like those who will complain about the beep (yes, it's not silent, no it isn't loud, it just makes you aware that you're delicious cup of joe is now fully prepared).
I drink coffee every morning, like most of America. I'm guessing it's to get any manufacturer remains out, and to let the wonderful Cuisinart product emit it's slight plastic scent the first time around (I have many Cuisinart products and each of them smells like plastic the first time I've used them). This machine is very functional, despite the water gauge being moderately inconvenient. Lastly, for those that complain that the coffee tastes like metal: I'm wondering if you by chance read the instructions. Unlike some, I work from home, so I enjoy brewing coffee right away and letting it sit while I work a bit, then go back for my 2nd, 3rd, 4th cup.
I will though agree that the water gauge is less than convenient, but hey it's there and I just need to curve my head around in the morning. To those that have problems with spillage, overflowing, and with problems with the carafe: others have said it, but it's mostly operator error. I would advise everyone to read the directions first, as many "complaints" could have been averted by users following the guidelines and instructions, such as: brew it first, make sure the lid is on tight enough, don't touch the bottom of the carafe when hot, etc. Until this machine, I had a glass carafe so my coffee would become less and less tolerable as the day wore on, until I threw the cold, scorched remains away around 10am. I know I'm one of the many that will say that the coffee stays piping hot, and the carafe is awesome.
I love the fact is it much quieter so I don't wake up at 5:30 am when the coffee pot turns on.Also purchased the gold filter with them, it's worth the $10. My husband loves the fact he can make coffee in the morning and have a cup in the afternoon and it's still hot and tastes good.
I never figured out why it had the taste it did, but it seemed like the material of the carafe may have contributed to the bad taste since the smell of it kind of tasted like the flavor of the coffee. I ditched the gold filter right away thinking it contributed to the metal taste. I tried everything, but it still took twice as much coffee as I was used to (almost 2 tablespoons per cup) to make it not taste like water, and even then it had a burnt metal taste. I was really excited about this coffee maker after my old Mr Coffee maker went bad and I had to push the start button every 30 seconds.I have a Caribou Coffee in my building (Obsidian dark roast rocks). I finally just returned it to Bed Bath Beyond--If you feel you have to try this coffee maker, get it from there since they have a great return policy--no questions asked even after I used it for close to 6 months.Everything else about this coffee maker is just like the other reviews say, even the 5 star reviews, but at the end of the day, it's the taste of the coffee that matters and not anything else.I'm back on the hunt to replace my thermal Mr Coffee that had to go and die on me. I was hoping for the same with this Quisinart, and I even ordered the Gold Filter too.Well, here's the short summary: I was completely dissatisfied with the brew. and was used to making pretty close to that quality coffee at home with my Mr Coffee. Weak, burnt, metal tasting.
She did run just water through it the first time and then it took 2 or 3 brews for it to really be broken in. I bought this as a Christmas gift for my mom. I'm very pleased with this purchase. The coffee is HOT, stays HOT, and even though my Mom hasn't changed the type of coffee she uses, I think it tastes better when brewed in this machine. She had been brewing coffee and then tranferring it to a carafe. This machine makes it so nice for her.
With the gold-screen filter basket (not included), it worked OK.Problem #2The filter basket holder came apart in the dishwasher. They said it is not warrantied because it is not supposed to be cleaned in the dishwasher. Actually, we like the coffee maker. Called Cuisinart at 800-726-0190. We purchased a replacement for $12. We like the carafe style that doesn't consume power once the coffee is made. But problem #1:With the paper filters, it leaked all over the counter.
